Why did my transaction fail, but gas was still deducted?

Blockchain networks require gas fees to compute operations, regardless of whether the transaction succeeds or fails. If your transaction failed (due to sudden gas spikes, slippage, or user cancellation), the validator nodes still kept the gas fee for the computational work they performed. This is a fundamental mechanic of EVM blockchains, not a bridge error.
